Fire in the car – what to do?
One hundred percent will not insure yourself from unhappiness, and therefore it is better to be prepared for all kinds of situations in order to get out of any of them with minimal damage. This means that you need to clearly understand what is happening, and be ready for the right behavior in any case.
A fire in a car is not just horror stories, but, unfortunately, a reality that many motorists have had to face. And do not think that this can never happen to you. It is better to know the reasons that can lead to a fire and the rules of conduct, if this happens.
The main causes of a fire in a car are several. We will tell about some of them. One of these causes may be a short circuit in the wiring or leakage of fuel (by the way, it is called the most frequent cause). Unfortunately, the leakage of fuel is not always possible to immediately detect. The fact is that the fuel supply hose wipes over time and may crack a little. At the same time, gasoline will not spill significantly, but it may well seep through.
Moreover, this malfunction can be seen only on a cold engine – then even in the cabin you can smell gasoline. When the engine warms up to operating temperature, the droplets of gasoline trapped on the hot block evaporate instantly. But on the road, anything can happen – up to a small circuit, that’s when the car can catch fire.
Smoking in the cabin is also a fairly common cause of fire. This happens when there is a careless handling of a cigarette, a cigarette lighter or matches, causing the seat upholstery or some flammable items in the cabin to light up.
Among the reasons that cause a fire in the car, called inattention and negligence when transporting flammable substances, a faulty gas installation. Another reason to call such a reason as a lightning strike, which in the rainy season and thunderstorms becomes a real danger.
And now you need to understand what to do if the fire has already begun. Do not panic and try to act quickly, but consciously. You must immediately stop the car at the curb, away from people, other cars and buildings. In no case can not continue to move – the fire will flare up even more! Turn off the ignition, put the car on the handbrake, take the documents from the car, disembark the passengers. Remember, you can not be in the car on fire for more than 90 seconds!
When you get out of the car, try to find a source of fire and estimate the intensity of the fire. But, if there is a fire in the area of the gas tank, immediately run away from the car with the passengers, because the car can explode at any second! It is useless to extinguish such a fire, the main thing is to save yourself and save people!
If the seat of fire is under the hood, opening the hood, be careful – due to the influx of oxygen, the emission of flame is possible. In order not to burn your hands when opening the hood, take a rag. At the time of opening, tilt your head to the side, and even better – jump back from the car (if you have time).
A stream of foam fire extinguisher should be sent to the fire center, but also do not forget about the rest of the fire area. Best of all, while you put out the fire, so that someone else throws a fire with sand, snow, or water. You can also cover the fire with a tarp, a blanket, a jacket, then the air flow will be minimal and there is a chance that the fire will stop quickly.
Fire extinguishing must be carried out very intensively, since if synthetic materials inside the car break out, it will be very difficult to put out the fire. If the fuel is already on fire, then first you need to extinguish it, and then the car.
To avoid a car fire, never refuel while the engine is running. Do not transport gasoline in plastic canisters (plastic accumulates static voltage, which can cause gasoline to ignite).
If your car often burns out light bulbs or fuses, do not wait, and immediately drive away the car to the service for an electrician to inspect! Perhaps these are the consequences of a short circuit, which could cause a fire.
Watch your car’s fuel hoses. Even if you do not understand anything, remember that any wire in the engine compartment must be carefully insulated.
Watch out for the gas installation if it is installed in your car. And, of course, be sure to carry with you a fire extinguisher, and even better – two. Moreover, it is best to store fire extinguishers under the front seats, and not in the trunk – it will be easier to get them in case of a fire.
